The Chair of Macromolecular Compounds and Fiber Chemistry (MSF) is part of the Institute of Polymer Chemistry (IPOC) and of the Faculty of Chemistry. Its approximately 35 employees (postdocs, doctoral researchers, Master and Bachelor students) work on synthetic polymer chemistry, polymer-based materials science and catalysis.
The research focus is in:
- polymer synthesis, especially polymerization catalysis (transition metal or NHC catalyzed)
- the synthesis of functionalized polymer materials (e.g., for heterogeneous catalysis)
- polymers for battery technology, for fiber-reinforced composite materials and for the production of high-performance fibers, in particular carbon fibers.
- Furthermore, research questions regarding reactor technology in the areas of metal-catalyzed heterogeneous catalysis and biocatalysis are addressed.
The head of the MSF, Prof. Dr. Michael R. Buchmeiser, is also Chairman of the Executive Board of the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF) and Spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC1333) "Molecular Heterogeneous Catalysis in Confined Geometries".
