Professor Eisenbach received his Ph.D. in Organic Polymer Chemistry at Mainz University, Germany in 1974. After a post-doctoral Harkness fellowship at the University of Massachusetts (UMASS) Amherst, he joined the Macromolecular Chemistry Institute at Freiburg University in 1976. There, he received his habilitation in 1980 and was appointed Professor in 1983. A year later he became Associate Professor at Karlsruhe University. In 1986 Claus Eisenbach moved to Bayreuth University as Full Professor where he served as Chair of Macromolecular Chemistry and from 1990 to 1993 as Acting Director of the Materials Research Institute. After moving to Stuttgart, he was Director of the Polymer Chemistry Institute at Stuttgart University as well as Head of the Research Institute for Pigments and Coatings at Stuttgart from 1995 until 2009. He served as vice-chairman of the Stuttgart University Council from 2003 until 2006. From 2004 to 2014, Professor Eisenbach was Scientific Chairman of Coatings Technology Area of the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) in Eindhoven/Holland. Claus Eisenbach was Visiting Professor at several Universities in the United States, namely Case Western Reserve, UMASS, MIT, Stanford, University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), as well as Science University, Tokyo/Japan.

As Professor Emeritus, Claus Eisenbach has been collaborating with the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) at UCSB; in addition, he has been involved as consultant for industry, non-profit scientific organizations and patent law firms.

Professor Eisenbach’s long-term interest has been in the design, synthesis and characterization of novel polymers and polymer materials, assembly and structure formation in polymeric systems and structure-properties relationships in polymers. Professor Eisenbach’s present activities are in polyelectrolyte and multicomponent materials systems. He is author or co-author of over 300 publications and 18 patents.

Current research interests and activities
Professor Eisenbach's long-term interest has been in the design, synthesis and characterization of novel polymers and polymer materials, assembly and structure formation in polymeric systems and structure-properties relationships in polymers.
His present activities are in polyelectrolyte and multicomponent materials systems.
